Jazz pianist Bart Flos goes solo again
After a series of solo CDs under the wings of NextSteps Projects, jazz pianist Bart Flos released his first triple CD album ‘Roots & Reflections‘ in 2019 under Stage 6, performed both solo and with a jazz trio. This time however, Flos is going ‘solo only’, again releasing three CDs under Stage 7. This new album is called ‘Clarity of Vision‘, in three parts: Sense of Purpose, Sense of Direction and Sense of Urgency.
“It’s been a long cherished dream of mine to dive into the studio with a concert grand piano of my choice,” says Flos, “and all that time I assumed that I would ultimately choose one of the three great piano builders: Steinway, Bösendorfer or Bechstein”. However, during the extensive search for the best grand piano for this project, he came across an unexpected piano brand: Fazioli. And not the least, but the Fazioli F308, at over three meters the largest concert grand piano in the world.
Not necessarily the largest
“It’s important to understand,” Flos continues, “that it was never my intention to play on the largest concert grand piano per se. It could just as well have been a smaller one from a much lesser-known builder. I’m not so much concerned with brand and size, but far more with sound, timbre, feel and softness. A lot of big brands have fallen by the wayside during my search, but in the end I fell in love with this Fazioli. The fact that this F308 is also the absolute favorite of jazz pianist Herbie Hancock made it extra special for me”.
Audio and video
The music project ‘Clarity of Vision’ includes a total of 45 compositions and arrangements of both well-known jazz standards and Flos’ original work. The first 24 compositions are recorded in the Volver Studio in Tilburg and appear on CD album and streaming platforms. During one of the studio days, video recordings were made of 6 of the 24 compositions and a short documentary was compiled, all of which can be viewed on YouTube.
The remaining 21 compositions were recorded as video clips in the home studio in Helmond under the name ‘The Leftovers’, and can be viewed on YouTube under ‘NextSteps Projects 2026‘.
